The project “Enhancing Cooperation in Waste management from Vessels in ADRION ports” aims to manage, prevent and limit the spread of marine pollution by strengthening capacity and establishing a coordinated intergovernmental framework for port authorities on waste management and recycling and seeks to maintain and protect valuable ecosystems and water resources.
ECOWAVES’s approach consists in monitoring, studying and sharing data regarding current situation in port areas, analyzing actual port waste management systems and sharing results among all PPs. Different means of sharing will be used in order to get a broad coverage: port authorities, local, regional, national authorities, research institutes and universities, cruising lines, tourist agency, including technical aspects aiming at preserving valuable ecosystems and water resources. The main project features are: state-of-art survey on methodologies and technologies for waste management in ports; purchase of special equipment to monitor and optimize current soft infrastructure and services; development of long lasting transnational guidelines for enhancing environmental ports’ status; agreements for durable transnational policies; effective capacity building; organization of workshops and study visits; production of video clips for cruisers and tourist promoting virtuous attitudes towards waste delivery aboard and in port areas; feasibility study to optimize port waste capacities; agreement with cruise lines as major sea waste producers. ECOWAVES’s will elaborate an innovative strategy by introducing custom-made performing model in port waste management systems for a better environment protection of port area, based on analysis of issues and needs related to the diverse conditions of partners’ ports, also foreseeing a monitoring process to ensure regular proceeding of pilot actions and equipment performance. The strategy goes beyond exiting practices, as it ensures direct involvement of all the stakeholders of vertical supply chain (from tourists as final beneficiaries, ship and cruise operators, port authorities, ministries, etc.). This new approach will increase awareness and capacities of all involve parties in proper waste management in port areas.
