The WATERBRIDGING project, implemented under the (Interreg VI-B) IPA Adriatic Ionian Programme, aims to enhance maritime routes as an efficient and smart alternative to the overloaded land transport system.
The project’s goal is to strengthen the role of waterways as a “bridge” for connections both within the territories of the macro-region and beyond. At the same time, it seeks to upgrade the environmental and digital performance of maritime and port hubs, as well as the inland waterways involved.
The project addresses common challenges, such as the disruption of the logistics supply chain and the limited implementation of environmental approaches, which hinder the creation of an efficient and competitive maritime transport system as outlined in the EUSAIR strategy.
The expected outcomes include the co-design of pilot actions aimed at developing alternative fuels and onshore power supply (OPS) systems, as well as the implementation of digital services that will enhance the integration of IT systems. Additionally, joint solutions will be implemented to drive targeted investments in pilot actions.
The project involves 8 partners from 6 different countries, as follows:
- Central Adriatic Ports Authority (Lead Partner, Italy)
- Igoumenitsa Port Authority SA (Greece)
- Centre for Research and Technnology Hellas (Greece)
- Intermodal Transport Cluster (Croatia)
- Port of Split Authority (Croatia)
- University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Skopje (North Macedonia)
- Science and Technology Park Novi Sad (Serbia)
- Port of Bar JSC (Montenegro)
The consortium is establishing the Adriatic-Ionian MOS and IWW Network, adopting a transnational strategy and action plan to achieve common sustainability goals and ensure seamless cooperation even after the project’s completion.
The project is implemented from 01.09.2024 to 31.08.2027 and is co-funded at 85% by the European Union through the IPA ADRION Programme.
