Emas System

With the Decision No. 141/3 / 2-1-2017 of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy, the registration of the Igoumenitsa Port Authority was approved for its activities in the EMAS (Eco- Management and Audit Scheme) with registration number EL-000112.

Please note that the Port Authority of Igoumenitsa is one of the few ports in Europe registered in the EMAS register and currently holds the international ISO14001 environmental management certificate as well as the PERS (PortEnvironmentalReviewSystem) certificate.

EMAS is based on Regulation (EC) No 1221/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2009 on the voluntary participation by organizations in the Community eco-management and audit scheme.

Today, EMAS addresses all organizations with environmental impact (e.g. industry, tourism, public administration, education, shops). The aim of the EMAS Regulation is to evaluate and upgrade the environmental performance of organizations and to reduce the environmental impact of the operation of their sites. The initiative and responsibility for the implementation of the system belongs exclusively to the organization concerned, which is called on to set its own qualitative and quantitative targets and to continually strive to improve their environmental performance by informing the public about the relevant issues.

A citizen who learns that an organization (or a specific organization’s activity area) has been verified by EMAS may know that the organization (or site) has identified the significant environmental impacts of its operation, has been audited to comply with environmental legislation and has put in place a program of continuous reduction of its environmental impact and saving of natural resources.

The Greek EMAS Register includes all organizations (private enterprises, foundations or public bodies) in Greece that are registered in the Community EMAS system. The registration of an organization verified by an accredited verification body shall be carried out by decision of the Minister of Industry of the United States on the recommendation of the EMAS Committee.
